Mr. Putter & Tabby Catch the Cold
Published in Paperback by Harcourt Paperbacks (01 October, 2003)
Authors: Cynthia Rylant and Arthur Howard
Average review score:

Best of the Series (So Far)
I've read the Mr. Putter & Tabby books with both of my children. It's a wonderful series for the beginning reader. This title is my favorite of the entire series. Mr. Putter has a cold and remembers what made him feel better when he was a boy. Chicken soup, some hot tea and an adventure book loaned by Mrs. Teaberry's dog, Zeke make this cold worth having. It perfectly captures just how much fun a sick day can be.

A great series built on loveable characters
My daughter who is now 8 and I have been reading the Mr Putter and Tabby stories from the very beginning when Mr Putter and Tabby poured the tea. In fact, she has learned to read thanks to this kind hearted old man and his "fine cat." This latest addition as the two of them deal with a common cold is uncommonly good. Cynthia Rylant has managed to convey the lives of two elderly people - Mr Putter and his neighbor, Mrs Teaberry - with dignity, humor and a sense of adventure in everyday living. My daughter loves this story and all the others because of the humorous situations and the likeability of the characters. I love them because as I approach my "Mr Putter years" -- I'm 56 -- I see him as a delightful example of what being an "old man" can be. Likewise I see my daughter learning compassion, acceptance and respect for older people so often missing in children's stories.

I urge any parent -- and especially grandparents -- to add this book and any of the other Mr Putter and Tabby books to their children's (and grandchildren's)reading repetoire.

Comforting and Cosy
One day Mr. Putter forgets to put his hat on when he goes out to fetch the newspaper, as he is in such a hurry to read the comics. Soon he has a cold, and his faithful cat Tabby can only comfort him so much. Fortunately, his neighbor, Mrs. Teaberry, sends over soup and tea in thermoses brought by her dog Zeke. One thing is still missing... an adventure book, which Zeke will only bring if he can stay and read it with them. What begins as a miserable day becomes "the best cold Mr. Putter ever caught," thanks to the generosity of all his friends. This beginning reader for first and second graders allows its audience to identify with a character who is old enough to be their grandfather, and amuses them with his animal companions. The illustrations by Arthur Howard are, as usual, bold, expressive, and colorful.

Mr. Putter & Tabby Toot the Horn

Authors: Cynthia Rylant and Arthur Howard
Average review score:

Wonderful, as are all of CYNTHIA RYLANT'S books
Mr Putter and Tabby are our favorites. Wonderful story, whimsical writing style. I RECOMMENED THIS ONE HIGHLY, and every one in the series.

You can't do everything
I have every book in this series. This one is a good book to show little ones that not every one can do it all. When my little one is too small to do something, this one shows that Mr. Putter can't learn to play the horn. His friendly neighbor does, but he is happy in the end. Get the whole series and enjoy. My 4 year old loves them, but secretly, I bought them for myself.

Best children book collection for kids and parents

The "Mr. Putter and Tabby" collection is the best I have found for children. This particular episode has Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry trying to play music more or less successfully but having a very good time at it and being happy to have at least given it a try. When you read it, you can make all sorts of funny 'music' sounds that bring joy to your little one -and are fun to do too...

All the "Putter & Tabby" books are really well illustrated with very expressive characters, and the stories are intelligent, funny, and warm. My child adores them and is always asking for a reading session of "Mr Putter and Tabby". He was 2 when we read our first one and the books are so great that I believe he will still enjoy them when he learns to read. In the mean time, I enjoy them too and haven't tired yet of reading a couple of them every evening. So, although until now I have borrowed these books from the public library, I am now buying the whole collection.

Organized Crime
Published in Hardcover by Wadsworth Publishing (24 July, 2002)
Author: Howard Abadinsky
Average review score:

Excellent text for Criminal Justice majors
I am a college professor who just finished teaching ORGANIZED CRIME to twenty college juniors and seniors. I selected Abadinsky's book as the text because it is carefully and thoughtfully "choreographed." The information provided flows in a sensible and clearly written design. Some texts appear to be designed for Rhodes Scholars and are virtually impossible to read. This is not the case with this great book! I recommend it to teachers and those who have in interest in this fascinating subject.

Organized Crime's concept, empircial evidence and current LE
If you (the reader, the researcher) is interested in Organized Crime, I strongly recommend this book (Howard Abadinsky's Organized Crime, 6th Ed.) This book is the only detailed book I have come across in studying Organized Crime. I am currently a criminal justice graduate student attending the University of Central Florida. RSB

A classic work by a leading expert in the field
In this revised edition of the classic text on organized crime Abadinsky provides a comprehensive overview of organized crime groups, traditions, operations and the impact on American society.

Out & About Campus: Personal Accounts by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender College Students
Published in Paperback by Alyson Pubns (April, 2000)
Authors: Kim Howard and Annie Stevens
Average review score:

Essential reading, gay or straight
Coming out of the closet is one of those things that makes one feel out in the open and sticking out like a sore thumb. You contemplate that you might be gay or bi, then finally realize that you are and come out of the closet. Right away, especially if you're anything like me, that's exactly what goes on. Surely, right off the bat, one will feel that they can't talk on the same level let alone relate to anyone. Out of curiosity, I bought this book, and read a bunch of the stories. Although not all of them are just about coming out of the closet, I could relate to a lot of the stories, and probably anyone that has ever come out and goes or has gone to college can relate to at least one of them. All in all, however, in order to get the most out of college, and an open minded perspective, I strongly recommend this collection to anyone just graduating high school and bound for college. Or, don't, and end up with everyone hating you, for you haven't outgrown the high school labeling mentality of calling every gay man a faggot.

Fascinating, Engaging, Helpful
The voices of the students come through eloquently in this engaging and fascinating book. The diversity of the GLBT experience on campus is evident. The book helps provide insight into the various experiences of GLBT students and helps readers see the experience as not at all monolithic. I recommend this excellent book.

Unbelievable!
As a straight college-age female, I was worried that I might not be able to identify and relate to the experiences of the writers. As I read, however, the authors made me realize that their stories are simply an account of their struggle to do what they feel is right--a process to which anyone can relate. I especially enjoyed the piece by the student from the University of Texas, Andrew Gray. His courage and determination are truly remarkable. Yay Andrew!

The Owner's Manual for Personality at Work
Published in Paperback by Bard Press (01 October, 2000)
Authors: Pierce J. Howard and Jane Mitchell Howard
Average review score:

Makes Big Five Interpretations Practial and Applicable
As a corporate psychologist, I was pleased to find the serious research underlying this book, although it should be just as appealing to new students and the lay public. It is an excellent combination of literature review and applied science. Particularly valuable are the mappings of Big Five personality factors to various leadership styles (Kotter, Bennis, etc.) and 200 managerial competencies. Additional chapters do the same for approaches to learning, team building, interpersonal relationships, sales skills, and more. This book should soon be required reading within this field.

A Consultant's Answer to the Tough Questions
This is a must have book for any consultant or any individual interested in conducting personality research.

I have been working in the industry for a number of years and I have finally found the one book that seamlessly integrates science and practice. The research is insightful and the recommendations applicable. The Howard's have done a fabulous job of understanding the needs of today's organizational psychologist/management consultants and created the ultimate resource guide and complimentary materials.

Because of this book, I am certain that I am providing my clients with better service, presentation and product! A great read, resource and thought-provoking tool.

Personality at Work
Being a doctoral student in organizational leadership, I have read most of the books written about personality research, and especially those that focus on leadership behavior. Examining leadership competencies, learning styles, team development, and the application of personality assessment with the book has "simply" further opened my eyes to the importance of improving interpersonal awareness in the organization. The Howard's book is the first that I feel approached the subject from an understandable and practical basis. I use the book daily as I write my dissertation as a reference for practical applications of personality testing with the NEO-PI-R, and how to apply what I have learned from my data in the topic of leadership. It was a pleasure to find a book that allowed me to peruse the table of contents and move right to a section that applied to my current research without having to struggle. A nice thing that the authors have done is to provide a common language that can be used in the workplace with regard to understanding individual differences. This can set the stage for better communication among team members. In addition, I have found that as people understand themsleves better and can speak a similar language it can improve the flow of overall understanding in the organization. The book has opened my eyes to better acknowledge individual differences within teams, and to believe that there is no perfect solution when choosing leaders and team members. The world must incorporate these important individual differences effectively into their organizational structure; so as opposed to sujectively wandering through the personnel challenges of today's workplace, understanding these differences and blending the right mixtures of personality traits can make a difference in determining success. I applaud their efforts, and look for more.

Painting the Head in Oil
Published in Hardcover by Watson-Guptill Pubns (March, 1979)
Author: John Howard Sanden
Average review score:

Highly Recommend!
This is one of the best, most thorough books on Portrait Painting. I especially benefited from the information on color mixing for the various skin tones, which I have seen in other books, but his is more in-depth. I won't let my book go!

most instructional oil painting portrait book i have read
this book gives you step by step instruction and teaches the basics as well as advanced ways to get portraits the way they should be. it includes the artist's palette and pictures of demostrations. he explains the colors of his palette as well as showing you how to make it with a chart for future reference. The darks, shadows , and light, the way in which he uses it to get the true illusion of 3 dimensional picture. i recommend this book to all artist alike.

This is the oil portrait painting bible.
Whether a beginner or experienced oil painter, this is a must-have book for your art techniques library. Sanden begins with general oil painting information about materials and equipment. He reviews his color palette in detail, discussing warms and cools, earth colors, and mixing your own flesh tints. He covers the basics of drawing the head and then talks about value, light, halftone, and shadow. Sanden's in depth color review includes hue, value and intensity, color mixing recipes and charts which you can make on canvas paper to keep for future reference. He shows you how to set up your palette, and gives clear and concise step-by-step painting instructions. After a review of general painting procedures, he paints (with examples) the head, including the mouth, teeth, chin, ears, forehead, hair, eyes, eyeglasses, and nose. Explanations are very clear and easy to follow. Lastly, he tells you how to capture the essence of your sitter. There are several color examples of his work throughout the book, as well as, black and white ones. He also discusses dark flesh tones, sitters attire, and the background. He encourages the painter to reduce the portrait into five parts: the light side of the face, the dark side of the face, the hair, the costume, and the background; to simplify. I use this book with my oil painting classes.

A People's History Of The United States: A Lecture at Reed College
Published in Audio CD by AK Pr Distribution (October, 1998)
Author: Howard Zinn
Average review score:

Liberate Your Mind
Howard Zinn has written a masterpiece. This book explodes many received untruths about the history of the US. The idea that governments act in the best interests of coorporations has a long history, Zinn goes to its foundations during the Revolution. This book needs to be on school curricula all over the world. After reading the book it is easy to see why America is war-mongering again, this time after the 'axis of evil'.

Zinn opens eyes!
I would like to praise Zinn for an outstanding book. I am a 38 year old, self educated history student. Mr. Zinn writes with a easy cadence and is able to keep interesting stories (history) that have previously bored me to tears! I learned not only new perspective and details but used the list of references to continue my lessons. I focus on labor history and this volume is the place to start. (no matter your interest) Mr. Zinn shines a new light on History because he writes from the working class perspective. I appreciate that Mr. Zinn is so detailed while not being overwhelming. In other books the tendency to abbriviate important happenings only serves to discount the struggles of the poor while highlighting the efforts of the wealthy. I strongly encourage people to read this book. It is as enjoyable to read as any good novel and very informitive. It proves again and again that truth is more facinating than ficton.

One of the few books on true history
The book is not for blind nationalists [like the 1st reviewer], who in Orwells's terms, have a remarkable ability of not seeing the atrocities committed by their own country. It is time that the silent holocaust, which has taken an enormous human toll, be revealed to humanity. People should realize that mass murderers like Kissinger are not the writers to be read when one is aiming for the truth. Zinn shows simply and beautifully how history should be written....a record of truth, no more no less.

Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbuck Built a Company One Cup at a Time
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion Books (September, 1997)
Authors: Howard Schultz and Dori Jones Yang
Average review score:

Thought provoking look into the mind of an entrepreneur
A thoroughly enjoyable read, "Pour Your Heart Into It" is an insightful look into both the rewards and challenges associated with not only buying into a business, but also developing that business into a powerhouse. More than a good read, however, the book is full of insightful comments on what to do (and not do) as an entrepreneur, e.g., on the importance of hiring enthusiastic people. Both entrepreneurs and investors in small companies will learn much from this book.

Wonderful inspiration, remarkable story!
Howard Schultz offers the details from the early days of Starbucks, over 25 years ago. The story begins with Howard's ambitions for working for the small bean company, and takes you through every phase of the business development. You will read about the first stores, the competition, the rapid growth, even the invention of the Frappuccino. This story is compulsively readable and full of inspiration, honesty and wisdom. You will also come to admire Starbucks the company. I am keeping my copy of this book on a shelf to refer to often when I need a reminder that anything is possible as long as you have a vision!

A Good Read Over Coffee
Schultz has provided a recap of his life events, those of Starbucks and the factors that influenced him and Starbucks that makes them what they are today. After reading you have an appreciation for how a person can maintain his integrity and build an organization that is based on concern for employees, customers and quality of product. For anyone who is looking for encouragement or suggestions on how to improve themselves or thoughts for maintaining or improving their company this is an excellent read. You will come away with an appreciate for the Starbuck organization and realize that it is more than a "Good Cup of Coffee".

The power of psycho-pictography; the cosmic key to the inner mind
Published in Unknown Binding by A. Thomas ()
Author: Vernon Linwood Howard
Average review score:

It's available again!
Marvelous news: this amazing book, a book with the power to spark an entirely new process in your life - the process of self-transformation - is back in print! You can get it at a reasonable price under a new title, "Secrets for Higher Success". Discovering this book was one of the turning points of my life; what an adventure it began. Are you weary of it all? The same old patterns, the same old lies - everything always the same? Do you feel, deep down, that nothing you have tried has ever really worked? This noble book contains something truly different for you. Get it, read it with an earnest heart - and give your life just one more chance to change.

This book changed my life forever..
I had the opportunity to get a copy of this book through a mail order offer of a course that taught me how to make money with stock options. I guess the guy bought the rights to the book or something, but I consider this book the only thing good I got out of that deal, and it was worth a million dollars. I don't think I paid anything for this book, and I'll never sell. I classify this book up there with Napoleon Hill, Dennis Waitely, W. Clement Stone, Dale Carnegie, Zig Ziglar, and the like.

BUT - this book is so unlike any other I have ever read. It completely changed my life. It helped me to understand that how we look at life is EVERYTHING and will determine everything about how it "turns out". Our perceptions are so powerful and can easily become distorted. You'll read each sentence twice, because each one is such a deep, spiritual insight. You'll never find another writer like Vernon Howard. Absolutely amazing! If this would allow me to, I would rate this one with 20 stars!

A must have for Vernon Howard fans
Vernon Howard's books present the clearest and most astonishing exposition of timeless spiritual truths I have yet encountered. They certainly aren't for everybody, but if you're one of those who, like myself, were so fortunate as to stumble across one of his books, open it up, and immediately have the sense, "this is something different, this is exactly what my spirit needs," then read on. The present title has been out of print for years and isn't even mentioned on the official VH website. The reason I know about it is that, on a friend's recommendation, I happened to order the 'course' that you will find advertised in Ken Roberts' book, "The Rich Man's Secret". That 'course' cost me about $100 and, apart from the Vernon Howard book, there isn't a whole lot to it (just my personal opinion). Why am I telling you this? Because that one book has been priceless to me. I have most all of VH's books and this one is my very favorite. It is a classic; so powerful, and yet so gentle at the same time. I've lent my copy to several friends and each has (independently) agreed that there is something unique about this particular book, even when compared to Howard's wonderful other works.

The unusual quality of Vernon Howard's spiritual writing needs to be experienced to be believed. As I said, it isn't for everybody; but to readers who already know its value, I say: you owe it to yourself to get this book, it is pure gold. Don't get me wrong: I absolutely do not think you should have to pay $100 to get it. Quite the opposite, I think it's a terrible shame that it isn't as widely available as the rest of Howard's work, and the marketing shenanigans surrounding the way in which it *is* currently available are not to my taste at all (again, just my opinion). If you don't already know and love Vernon Howard, it would make no sense to pay this much -- start instead with one of his many other books, like "Pathways to Perfect Living". I'm just writing this review to make other Vernon Howard readers aware that they do have the option of obtaining this strangely "lost" title, and that, for me at least, it has proven to be worth many times more than what I had to pay to get it.

Practice in Christianity : Kierkegaard's Writings, Vol 20
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (05 November, 1991)
Authors: Soren Kierkegaard, Edna H. Hong, Sren Kierkegaard, and Howard Vincent Hong
Average review score:

Important Kierkegaard
_Practice in Christianity_ is one of Kierkegaard's more underrated books, and should not be overlooked. I will summarize his concepts as best I can: In this book Kierkegaard encourages a rigorous and "militant" practice of Christianity. By "militant" he does not mean violence in the physical sense, obviously. What he means is a determination to constantly find better ways to understand God and Christ, even though every question that gets answered seems to spawn more questions. Rigorous Christianity is a continuous chasing after that which perpetually eludes us. Even though we may never reach a true catharsis in our understanding, the process of continually seeking understanding is still beneficial to the individual. It helps to strenthen the uniqueness of our individuality, and helps to set us apart from society in a way that preserves the "heterogeneity" of society. Kierkegaard stresses the importance of maintaining heterogeneity within society because this is essential in the creation of individual personalities, and is an essential ingredient to conscious life in general. Kierkegaard states it thus: "woe to the Christian Church when it will have been victorious in this world, for then it is not the Church which has been victorious but the world. Then the heterogeneity between Christianity and the world has vanished, and Christiantiy has lost" (p. 223). It is important that society does not ever reach a consensus on what to believe in, because then we will all rest on our laurels and abandon the continual, rigorous striving that is essential in enhancing our individualist personalities. The loss of individualism is synonymous with the end of conscious life and self-awareness as we know it. There must always be individuals who stand out as beacons of virtue, if for no other reason than to infuse other people with life by making them feel inadequate and subjugated. Rigorous, militant Christians must always turn their back on the world and strive for something better, and indoing so they help to blaze a trail into higher realms of understanding, dragging the reluctant congregation behind them.

If these concepts sound interesting to you, I highly recommend this volume. Die hard atheists will probably view this book as a fruitless discussion over a moot point. But people who consider themselves Christian, and want to set themselves apart from other lackadaisical, so-called Christians, could benefit greatly by reading this book. This is not a book for people who show up to church just to show up and then fall asleep in the pew - it is for people who want to reach a higher standard of rigorous practice in religion.

A book to make you think
This book is somewhat hard to review. To me its sole purpose is to get you away from rationalizing about God and to develope an uncompromising faith in the God of Christianity. The book is revelant even to our times when nominal Christianity runs rampant and doctrinal beliefs akin to the Health and Wealth message gain acceptance from the naive masses. I guess in the end this book made me think about what i do believe about God and Jesus...something some of us are afraid to do candidly because of what we might find.

Below the surface of modern theology
To describe Kierkegaard is, to say the very least, difficult! Not that his style of writing is boring or even overly difficult. Not at all! His style is poetic, warm, and loving. Yet all the while, he makes you feel uncomfortable, leads you to questioning your faith, and often makes one angry! However, the thing that I admire most about the author and the book "Practice in Christianity", is how he has led me to recklessly look inside myself, so that I can see the the truth about who I am! In short, no other author has ever made me just "think", the way that SK has. I have read and heard much of modern theology. For me, this "modern theology" only scratches the surface of these important thoughts. SK will take your mind and heart, to spiritual depths that are thus far, undiscovered.
